Go Green

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability is a shared priority across the Carlow Garden Trail. In 2024, fourteen of our members took part in a specialised training programme, which was funded by Fáilte Ireland and focused on building more sustainable visitor experiences.

Delivered by The Tourism Space and accredited by Munster Technological University (MTU), the programme supported each garden and garden centre, house and estate to look closely at how they operate – from energy and water use to biodiversity, accessibility and how visitors experience each place.

Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, each member developed their own Sustainability Action Plan. These plans reflect the unique character of each location, whether that means caring for historic landscapes, supporting wildlife, reducing waste, or working more closely with local suppliers and communities. The training combined online workshops, in-person sessions and a learning visit to the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark, allowing participants to see best practice in action and apply it to their own sites.

Just as importantly, the programme strengthened collaboration across the Carlow Garden Trail. Members are now working together, sharing ideas and supporting each other as they continue to improve. This is an ongoing journey and all are committed to making steady, meaningful progress. Many of our members have already taken further steps on their sustainability journey through Fáilte Ireland’s Climate Action Programme.

For visitors, this means you can enjoy the Carlow Garden Trail knowing that each place is being cared for thoughtfully, protecting its beauty, heritage and environment for the future.

What Sustainability Means on the Trail

Sustainability across the Carlow Garden Trail takes many forms. It can be seen in:

  • Caring for historic houses, gardens and landscapes
  • Protecting biodiversity and supporting wildlife habitats
  • Reducing energy use and exploring renewable solutions
  • Managing water carefully and reducing waste
  • Supporting local producers, suppliers and communities
  • Creating welcoming, accessible and meaningful visitor experiences

These actions are often quiet and ongoing, but together they make a real difference.
