Care, Belonging and Everyday Sustainability

Sustainability at BEAM Services CLG is expressed first through people. The choices made here – about space, energy, materials and the garden – are shaped by what supports wellbeing, dignity and a sense of belonging for members and their families. Care for place is inseparable from care for people, and the environment is treated as something that actively contributes to daily life rather than something managed at a distance.

The Garden as Part of Daily Life

The gardens at BEAM, known collectively as The Barrow Experience, are not just ornamental. They are working, lived-in spaces that form part of the rhythm of the service. Being able to step outside, spend time by the river, sit in the garden or take part in simple outdoor activity makes a tangible difference to how people experience their day. On good days, the garden brings energy and calm in equal measure.
Over time, the garden has been shaped to be accessible, welcoming and safe, with seating, paths and garden rooms that encourage people to use the space in their own way. For many members, having this environment on the doorstep is deeply important. It offers continuity, familiarity and a connection to nature that supports confidence and wellbeing.

Practical Sustainability, Grown Over Time

Environmental sustainability at BEAM is rooted in long-term, practical decisions. The buildings are heated using a geothermal system, and solar panels contribute to energy use on site. These systems are reviewed regularly, with plans to upgrade as technology improves, ensuring the service remains efficient and resilient while managing rising energy costs.

Composting plays a simple yet meaningful role in daily operations. Food waste is composted on site and reused in the garden, creating a circular system that reduces waste and supports planting. Materials are reused wherever possible, guided by a pragmatic approach that balances environmental responsibility with durability and value for money.

Recent investment in the garden, including new seating and stonework built using long-lasting materials, has been driven by the impact these improvements have on members’ experience. They are both cosmetic and practical enhancements that make the space more usable and enjoyable for those who rely on it.

A Place Rooted in Community

BEAM Services is deeply connected to its local community. The gardens sit beside the River Barrow and are part of the everyday landscape of the town. Locals regularly pass through, stop to chat or spend time by the water, and the site becomes a focal point during events such as the Carlow Garden Festival, when it welcomes a wider public audience.

This openness reflects the role BEAM plays beyond its walls, as a place of connection, familiarity and support for families as well as members. The garden, in particular, acts as a gentle bridge between the service and the wider community.

Looking Ahead

Looking forward, BEAM Services CLG remains focused on steady improvement. Reviewing renewable energy systems, continuing to invest in the garden, and ensuring the environment remains supportive, welcoming and well cared for are ongoing priorities. Sustainability here is woven into daily life, shaped by attention, consistency and care, creating a place where people and community can continue to thrive together.

Managers and owners across the Carlow Garden Trail, of which BEAM Services, is a member, have completed an accredited Level 6 Certificate in Sustainable Destination Practice with Munster Technological University. As part of the programme, participants completed independent assessments of their current practice and developed future-focused Sustainability Action Plans. Together, they share a commitment to progressing their sustainability journey in a practical, collaborative and accountable way. Their shared intention is to offer welcoming visitor experiences that support the long-term wellbeing of Carlow’s people, heritage and natural environment.
