Burtown House & Gardens
A Storied Past
Once the centre of a 2,000-acre estate and built for the Quaker Robert Power about 1710, Burtown is close to the village of Ballytore, one of Ireland’s most prominent Quaker strongholds. Isabel Shackleton (married to the present owner’s great grandfather and first cousin to the explorer Ernest Shackleton) is responsible for some of the original layout, but over the last 20 years it has been greatly enlarged and reclaimed by the present owner, artist Lesley Fennell.
Botanical Diversity
Discover an array of flora, from old roses and peonies to candelabra primulas and ferns. Wander through the expansive woodland, surrounded by water, and admire the collection of hostas, iris, and more. There is also a walled organic vegetable garden that has been in continuous production for 150 years.
Culinary and Other Delights
The on-site award-winning Geen Barn Restaurant is available for brunch and lunch every Wednesday – Sunday, and for dinner every Friday and Saturday evening, pre-booking is essential. Jo’s Pantry an artisan food shop and coffee shop is also available and is suitable for more casual dining.
The Green Barn Restaurant has a heated garden tent available for group bookings, as well as a number of other semi-private indoor and outdoor spaces. Using produce almost always that has been grown on their organic farm and kitchen gardens, seasonal produce plays the staring role on their menus
