Tom Brown is one of Britain’s most respected contemporary gardeners and horticulturalists, currently serving as Head Gardener at the renowned West Dean Gardens in West Sussex. Appointed in 2019, he oversees the extensive historic gardens, including the celebrated Victorian walled kitchen garden, cut flower gardens, arboretum, orchards and thirteen magnificent Victorian glasshouses. His work combines traditional horticultural craftsmanship with a modern, naturalistic planting style that has brought fresh energy and creativity to West Dean.
Before joining West Dean, Tom spent almost a decade as Head Gardener at Parham House and Gardens, where he earned widespread recognition for his imaginative planting schemes and sensitive stewardship of the historic landscape. Earlier in his career, he worked at the prestigious RHS Garden Wisley, managing plant and vegetable trials and developing a deep expertise in ornamental and productive gardening.
Alongside his gardening work, Tom is a respected writer, broadcaster, lecturer, and RHS judge. He regularly contributes to BBC Gardener’s World Magazine, Gardens Illustrated, Surrey and national newspapers and has just published his first book The Greenhouse Book.
Speciality teas and coffees, sandwiches and salads are available in Sugar and Spice Café on the grounds of Altamont Plants in Altamont Gardens.
This café provides comfort and refreshment in the beautiful setting of the walled Garden in Altamont, offering delightful home baked cakes and scones with freshly brewed tea and coffee. Light snacks including sandwiches and salads in the summer months. Open end of January to October daily 10.30 a.m. – 4.30 p.m. and weekends, weather permitting in November and December.

Directions: From Dublin/Waterford exit the M9 at junction 5 for N80 Rosslare. Continue along the N80 through the village of Ballon and the N80/N81 junction. Turn left at the next crossroad junction signed Altamont Gardens, From Carlow Town follow the N80 through Ballon and continue as above.
Type of event: The talk takes place in an indoor marquee on the grounds of Altamont Plants with the opportunity to view Altamont Gardens and the Corona North Commemorative Border within the grounds of Altamont Plant Sales, either before or after the talk.
