The Barrow Experience is a unique series of ten interconnecting gardens which bring to life the history, folklore and heritage of the beautiful Barrow Valley. It is situated in the grounds of BEAM Services, a training centre for people with intellectual disabilities, on a picturesque site that bounds the canal off the River Barrow. Paul Smyth is a well-known and respected Irish gardener and in this talk shares his key insights about gardening, offering valuable tips and techniques for creating beautiful and sustainable gardens.
This is a great opportunity to view this unique garden and hear the story behind its creation and development. From the Dinn Righ Garden to Druids’ Wood, the Potager Garden, Monastic Courtyard, Convent Garden, Reflective Garden, Water Garden, Co-operation Garden, Mindfulness Garden and the French Garden there is so much to explore and enjoy.

Paul Smyth is a renowned Irish gardener and a horticultural graduate of SETU. His first job and placement was in the garden of the late Angela Jupe at Bellefield House and Gardens in County Offaly which opened his eyes to the world of plants and the craft of gardening. He spent a number of years in the UK working for two of the top specialist nurseries, firstly at Evolution Plants, described as a Botanical Ark for wild collected plants and then at Crug Farm Plants a mecca for new, unusual and rare plants. In November 2016 and 2017 he joined a plant hunting expedition to the north of Vietnam.
In more recent years he has returned to Ireland working as a plantsperson, implementing and planting designs and advising on planting work. He has also appeared in a number of TV programmes with the gardener Diarmuid Gavin as well as co-publishing a book with Gavin titled Gardening Together and a podcast titled DIRT. He is now working as Head Gardener at Bellefiled House.
