  • Time: 11:00 am

Step into the inspiring surroundings of Altamont Gardens for a captivating talk by John Anderson, gardener to the King of England, as he shares stories and insights from some of the most remarkable gardens shaped by the influence of the Gulf Stream.

John will take audiences on a journey through the extraordinary gardens he has managed, from the intimate charm of Mount Usher in County Wicklow to the dramatic, sub-tropical oasis of Inverewe in northwest Scotland. He will also delve into the woodland splendour of Exbury, home to the Rothschild rhododendron collection and share experiences from the renowned Savill and Valley Gardens in Berkshire.

What makes this talk particularly special is the wealth of practical “takeaways” John weaves throughout. Expect plenty of those much-loved nuggets of wisdom – from clever planting combinations and how to work with your local microclimate, to tips on achieving year-round interest and managing large or small spaces with confidence.

This is a rare opportunity to learn from one of the most respected figures in horticulture, in a setting that perfectly reflects the themes of his work – natural beauty, thoughtful design and the joy of gardening.

  • About John Anderson

John Anderson trained at the National Botanic Gardens, Dublin and The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England.  His first gardening role was the position of Head Gardener at the famous Mount Usher Garden, Co. Wicklow. He made many changes and plant introductions over the period and wrote a plant inventory before he left in early 2002. For the remaining part of 2002 Anderson travelled in the Southern hemisphere especially Australia, Tasmania and South Africa. On his return in early 2003 he took up a new post as Head Gardener at The National Trust for Scotland’s premier garden Inverewe, in the north-west corner of the Highlands. This coastal 40 acre woodland garden boasts some of the finest tender rhododendrons amongst a wealth of tender and exotic perennials in these islands. Three years later he headed south to the world famous Exbury Gardens, home of the Rothschild Family along the south coast of Hampshire. In June 2016 Anderson became the fourth keeper of the gardens at Windsor Great Park with responsibility for the Savill Garden, the 250 acres Valley Garden and the private garden of Windsor Castle Frogmore.
