One of the largest and finest Spanish chestnut trees in Ireland greets you on your arrival to Hardymount Gardens.
This enchanting, compact garden is rich in diversity and charm, featuring a splendid walled garden hidden behind the house.
Hardymount Gardens
Secret Corners and Garden Charm
Within these walls, visitors will discover a collection of rare and unusual plants and flowers, such as the towering Giant Romneyas, fiery Lobelia Tupa, and sculptural Macleya, adorning the vibrant herbaceous borders. Paulownia and Euonymus Red Cascade adorn the shrub border beside the vegetable patch, and past the pergola, clothed in wisteria and roses.
The gardens offer more than just a visual feast; they are a labyrinth of hidden vistas and secret corners, each revealing a new layer of beauty. The old-fashioned charm is enhanced by espaliered fruit trees and climbing roses that grace the garden walls, creating a romantic backdrop that feels like a step back in time.
Continued Care and Culinary Delights
Sheila Reeves-Smyth developed and improved the garden extensively, living here from 1983 until her death, aged 92 in 2018. Her daughter Justina and husband Mark along with their three children now live here and continue to care for the garden. Justina is a Ballymaloe trained cook, and they welcome groups for morning coffees, lunches and afternoon teas by prior appointment.
