The forest is a sanctuary for many mammals, birds and insect species, within its 185 acres. There are a great variety of trees species from beech and oak, to Douglas fir and alder.
Patrick Hunt guides you on this leisurely walk, sharing his extensive knowledge and passion for trees, shrubs, wildflowers and the intricate eco-systems of forests. During the walk, you’ll learn about the unique characteristics and ecological significance of different tree species. Patrick explains how trees support various wildlife species and contribute to the health and balance of the forest ecosystem. You’ll also discover the vibrant world of wildflowers that add splashes of colour to the forest floor and the myriad bird species that call Rath Wood Forest home.

Directions: From Dublin/Waterford take Exit 4 on the M9 motorway. Follow signs for Castledermot and then take the R418 to Tullow. Rathwood is located on the R725 Tullow to Shillelagh Road, 5km from Tullow Town.
Type of event: Outdoors event. The Merry Tree Restaurant in nearby Rathwood offers everything from a light snack to a full meal in a spacious and comfortable restaurant. Hot food lunches seven days per week with a full deli and sandwich range including local, organic salads.
About Patrick Hunt
Patrick Hunt is an architect turned gardener and biodiversity specialist, who found his passion later in life when the recession of 2009 gave the opportunity to go a different path. Patrick now provides workshops, consultancy and design services in the areas of food growing, sustainable gardening and the creation of wildlife friendly gardens. Patrick has a passion for all kinds of plants like the best ornamentals to grow in the garden or native Irish Wildflowers in places like the Burren. Patrick studied Organic Horticulture and Permaculture Design along his journey really enjoys teaching young and old on topics such as foraging, wildflowers, trees, insects, birdlife and mammals. Patrick finds that he is always learning and discovering new things in gardening and biodiversity which keeps his interest and passion whetted. Patrick is a member of the Heritage in Schools panel since 2015 and enjoys working with children of all ages, introducing them to the wonders of the natural world and especially what can be found in the locality. Most days of the week Patrick is out exploring the hedgerows and wilder spaces within communities revealing the wonders of nature to the next generation.
He is the author of The Happy Bee in response to the use of chemicals in gardening and it’s aim is to get the reader to reconsider their gardening methods.
