SUMMARY:Keeping It Country - The James and Joe Garden Show at Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Join two of the most engaging voices in UK horticulture\, Joe Swift and James Alexander-Sinclair\, for a lively and insightful conversation on garden design and creativity. \nTo start the evening\, Joe Swift provides a fascinating insight into his latest project\, Joe’s Country Garden\, a deeply personal garden he is developing from scratch following his move from urban London to rural Dorset. \nSet within a mature two-acre site\, the garden is a true work in progress and offers a rare opportunity to see how a leading designer approaches a garden over time. Joe will share his thinking behind the transformation\, from early site decisions and reshaping the layout\, to introducing structure through pathways and evolving planting schemes. He will also explore how he is working with what was already there – including woodland and meadow areas – and reflect on the realities of building a garden from the ground up\, from hard landscaping and soil preparation to planting\, pruning and long-term planning. \nIn the second part of the evening\, James will introduce his own garden – a space that is a few years further along in its development – offering a contrasting perspective and allowing both speakers to reflect on how gardens evolve over time. A chatty and engaging exchange is promised\, with Joe and James contributing to each other’s talks – questioning\, commenting and occasionally disagreeing – giving the audience a genuine insight into how two experienced garden designers think and work. \nExpect honest reflections\, practical insights and plenty of laughs as they compare approaches\, share lessons learned and highlight what has worked (and what hasn’t). \nThe evening will conclude with an audience Q&A – with a twist. In true James and Joe Garden Show style\, questions are encouraged\, but only the interesting ones… and preferably nothing about dead plants. \nBlending expertise with personality and entertainment\, this promises to be an engaging and memorable evening for gardeners of all levels.

SUMMARY:It’s Never Too Late with Oliver Schurmann
DESCRIPTION:Set in the charming surrounds of Hardymount Gardens\, It’s Never Too Late by Oliver Schurmann is a thoughtful and inspiring talk that reflects on change\, renewal and the evolving journey of a life in plants. \nIn 2025\, Oliver and his wife Liat marked 25 years of Mount Venus Nursery\, supplying exceptional plants to gardeners across Ireland. That milestone coincided with a significant new chapter: leaving their long-established home in the walled garden at Tibradden House\, near the Dublin Mountains and moving just up the road to a striking and unconventional new site. \nOnce a granite sand quarry\, this landscape has\, over the decades\, been reclaimed by nature into a place of quiet beauty featuring winding-like paths\, dramatic sunken hollows\, mature trees and steep fern-covered banks. It is within one of these natural amphitheatres that their new nursery has taken root. \nIn this talk Oliver will document that journey of moving\, reimagining and starting again – offering honest reflections on the lessons learned along the way. Oliver will share insights into working with the land rather than against it\, responding to what a landscape offers. Have your pen and paper ready\, as Oliver shares plenty of practical advice and those all-important nuggets of wisdom to keep your garden looking beautiful and dynamic throughout the year. A stunning 100-page hardback book\, SLOW | CREATION | QUIET | ROOTS | LISTENING\, reflects on their deep connection to Tibradden House and the Dublin Mountains. Copies will be available to purchase on the day. \nThis event takes place indoors and includes an opportunity to explore Hardymount Gardens at your leisure either before or after the talk. Guests will also be treated to a most wonderful afternoon tea\, lovingly prepared by Ballymaloe-trained cook Justina McKeever. This is no ordinary tea – expect a seasonal spread featuring the very best of Irish ingredients\, from homemade cakes and scones to delicate sandwiches and lemon drizzle cake\, all served with flair and generosity. Relax under the trees or in the charming tea tent and let the atmosphere of Hardymount work its magic!

SUMMARY:Biodiversity Walk and Talk with Éanna Ní Lamnha
DESCRIPTION:By following this short tree trail through Ballon Village the visitors pass twelve Irish trees\, each denoted with a plaque. \nAlthough it is more usual to plant ornamental tree varieties in village centres and housing estates\, native trees attract more native birds and insects\, and so increase biodiversity within the village. Some of the common trees such as beech\, lime and sycamore have not been included on this trail. This is because they are not native\, but were introduced into Ireland by man hundreds of years ago\, and have since become naturalised.
